the only
photograph
I only have one photo of myself from my baby and toddler time. My parents didn't own a camera but one day they walked by a photography studio in their hometown in Yugoslavia and decided to have my photo taken. I was around 11 months old, smiling into the camera, showing my four front teeth and wearing my favorite overall.
Soon after, the war in Yugoslavia broke out and when my parents escaped to Austria, they carried that photo in their wallet. It is my only reference to what I looked like as a baby and I often wished my parents were standing next to me in that photograph. What did we look like as a family? How did they hold me? Were we happy?
Pictures capture more than just smiles; they tell a story of connection, love, and the everyday moments of our lives together.
For me, photography is exactly that- a way to recall a moment, freeze a memory so we can come back to it and relive it. But in order to do that, we need to capture it first.
